School Council

Established in 1993, the School Council comprises the Principal and the P & C President (as automatic appointments) together with three elected staff and three elected parent members. Additionally, a community member drawn for Roseville Chase Rotary Club completes this group.

The Council is involved in assisting in determining the broad aims and goals of the School and advising on ways of achieving them. It endeavours to be an initiator of ideas and provides a forum for discussion of strategic issues concerning the needs of the School and the children. The Council is responsible for establishing a liaison between the School and relevant Community organisations and for promoting activities consistent with the School and the Community.

Matters which Council have been working on this year include;

  • Re-writing the School's Enrolment Policy
  • Seeking Sponsorship from local business organisations
  • Applying for a Commonwealth Grant in order to conseve and use water more efficiently
  • Overseeing the management of the Investing in our SchoolS Grant for the upgrade of our play equipment
  • Finalsing the extension to the School Hall and seeking P and C support to finalise roofing near the canteen and walkway
  • Liaising with Department of Education and Training officers to look at issues associated with lack of playground space for our ever increasing enrolment.

Previous Projects that Council have been involved in include;

  • the acquisition and redevelopment of neighbouring property now known as The Duntroon Block,
  • lobbying the RTA and Ku-ring-gai Council to ensure safe travel of students, clear road signage, lower speed limits and better traffic signalling.
  • evaluating the school's educational programmes as part of the school's annual review and reporting process.
  • investigation of corporate sponsorship.
  • preparing submissions for joint funding with the NSW Department of Education and Training to extend our current school hall.
  • monitoring any issues to do with student and staff safety.

Roseville Public School is one of the few public primary schools that has maintained the School Council as one of the governance bodies of the school.

Various other sub-committees operate within the Association and increase opportunities for parent participation These include;

Meetings are well attended with members committed to providi9ng exceptional support to the educational and social programs of the school.

Recent Community Accomplishments

The hall renovation and extension was a major focus for both the P&C and the School Council in 2005. The outdoor covered area will provide a very large all weather area for play and training for our students. Externally there is a store to hide the big collex bins as well as gardening and maintenance store rooms and a big store room for our sports equipment. Inside the chair store, gym store and band store have all been significantly enlarged. The stage area has been increased and the access onto the stage is much easier for big school productions. We are really looking forward to our new hall and we are very, very grateful to the school community for their efforts in raising funds to match the NSW government's joint funding program.

Our new sun shelter has been erected. It covers about 50% of the quadrangle and is a weather resistant shelter that enhances play, learning and sport. This project was funded from the Federal Government's Investing in Our Schools Grant and the School Council responded quickly to the opportuntiy of gaining a funding grant through this federally funded program. A big thank you to parents, Sue, Rob, Margie, Chris and Ross for the many hours that they took to get our submission to the Federal government.

Volunteers

Parent volunteers are indispensable to our school programmes. They assist with:

In addition parents assist with transportation of students and often accompany classes on their excursions..

To assist with any of these activities please refer to the weekly Bulletin or talk to your child's teacher.

Please note that: All volunteers must sign the Prohibited Persons declaration before working with children at the school. If you haven't signed this form, please drop into the office and complete one.

Reading Support Tutors

We have been very fortunate in the past to have a highly committed band of parents who generously give their time and support to work with children on a one-to-one basis as a reading tutor using the Pause, Prompt and Praise method. Time given varies from 20 minutes once a week to two or three times each week. This aspect of our Literacy Support Program is vital to students needing to maintain gains or in need of additional input, practise and encouragement. If you can assist in any way or would like to know more please contact the office for details.

Garden Working Bees

Our grounds are maintained by Mr Clegg and by regular working bees. Working bees usually happen 3 times a year and involve the community in tidying, planting and creating. At our first working bee this year more than 50 parents turned up to lend a hand. Many hands did make light of the work as many jobs were completed in a very smart time. Thank you to all who helped.

If you haven't got the time or an interest in gardening, then you can still support the garden committee by paying $30 per family for a WORKING BEE BUY OUT. Cash and cheques made payable to RPS P & C are accepted so please see the office if this is your way of contributing. We need your support. The school grounds don't maintain themselves and although Mr Clegg puts lots of effort into garden maintenance, his numerous other duties means that he too needs help and support in order to maintain a nice environment for our children and the whole school community. All contributions and assistance are gratefully appreciated.

Fund Raising

Various fund raising and social events occur throughout the school year. Examples of such events include;

  • Mother's Day Luncheons
  • Father's Day Breakfasts
  • Social Nights
  • Trivia Nights
  • Giant Raffles, Food and Chocolate Drives
  • Art Exhibitions
  • Christmas Cards

Tuckerbox

An additional community service that our parents provide is called Tuckerbox. Tuckerbox is an organised team of volunteer cooks who ensure that there is always a supply of fresh and frozen meals on hand for anyone in our school community who, for whatever reason, could do without cooking a dinner. In 2001, approximately 40 cooks delivered over 50 meals to people needing a little T.L.C. Foil boxes, recipes and instructions and even transport is all organised but cooks-on-call are always needed. Usually several days notice is given and you can choose to provide a frozen meal at your convenience, buy a yummy take-away something or supply a freshly prepared delight. If you would like to be involved in this worthwhile RPS project, follow this link to download a form and simply drop it in to the school office.
